Dunkin’ Donuts Manager Sentenced and Fined
Dunkin’ Donuts manager, George Valvanis, was sentenced to six months of home confinement, fined $64,000 and placed on five years probation with a condition of 20 hours per month of community service for recruiting and hiring illegal aliens. Valvanis, who manages several Dunkin’ Donuts stores in Portland, Maine was sentenced August 2, 2011 by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).
According to ICE, he knowingly hired unauthorized workers and records show he even used an “illegal alien’s false attestation of U.S. Citizenship in an employment eligibility immigration I-9 form in order to comply with the government’s employment eligibility verification system” [E-Verify].
Employers and managers are coming to understand that it is no longer just a job. Their personal lives can be deeply affected by poor choices or mismanagement of the I-9 process.
